Farlow Facelift

We had a good crew come out to help with more trailwork on Farlow the other day. This steep staircase was washing away pretty quickly.
This new line takes the old logging road that was hidden beneath years of fallen locusts.

Chuck and Sam burned through all of their gas to cut out 20+ logs.

Thanks to everyone for helping out. I think everyone was surprised at how quickly we knocked this out! With proper planning and a hardworking group of folks we seem to be getting a lot done in Pisgah lately! What a great way to spend a Sunday morning.

Trailwork and Recon with Jeremiah Bishop and Sam Koerber

Jeremiah Bishop and Sam Koerber worked together this week to repair a washout section on a connector trail off Cove Creek. In two weeks they'll battle it out on the same trail in the Pisgah Mountain Bike Stage Race. We had a diligent crowd helping out last week and got a lot done in the few hours before the sun set.

Pisgah Dog gives his mark of approval.

Sam balances a hoe and baby Lucy while clearing a drain.

The Breakfast of Champions. Pancakes with Jeremiah before preriding Stage 1 on Thursday.
Jeremiah and I hit the trails to preride Stage 1 with Cycles De Oro riders Morgan Olsson and Eric Jackson. Sam Koerber met us halfway to show us how to ride some gnarly stuff on the top of Black Mountain. Video to come soon.

We have a few more trailwork days coming up here soon.

October:
  • 11th Sun Farlow Gap. 9AM-2PM. Meet at the Daniel Ridge Trailhead.
  • 24th Sat Black Mountain 9AM - 2PM. Meet at the BM Trailhead.

Brevard College

The Brevard Cycling Team helped out today as I pushed in some new trail on the campus of Brevard College. Looks like the prologue is going to have some sweet flowy trail in it. As I drove away this afternoon, I had trouble believing we put some of the funnest trail I've seen in a while right in the center of town!

Farlow!

We had ten people come out today to help with trailwork on Farlow Gap trail. We got a ton of work done including much needed treadwork on the severely washed out section. Farlow is once again fully rideable. Nice! We also cleared out the trees down on the lower section of Daniel. Makes for a much more ejoyable ride. Go ride Farlow!

We've spent the last two weeks doing some tread work on Black Mountain. This mainly consisted of clearing the muck out of the drains, rock armoring and some new treadwork. There's still plenty more to be done. Next trailwork day is Tuesday, September 8th on Upper Cove Creek 5:30-8PM.

Pisgah Mountain Stage

Competition is heating up in the Pisgah Mountain Stage. The Monavie-Cannondale team is well represented with Jeremiah Bishop, Tinker Juarez and Ben Sonntag all registered as riders. East Coaster Harlan Price with Independent Fabrications signed up early. Max Knox from team DCM ENERGY in South Africa and his team manager Ian Gerrit Van Der Walt also signed up recently. We've got riders coming from Guatemala too! Looks like it's turning into an international mountain biking event. When's the last time you raced with cyclists coming from out of the country to race? Dave Wiens also mentioned the race in his blog the other day. Is he coming too? Other names mentioned in the rumor mill have been Kris Sheppard, Kelly Emmett, and Rebecca Rusch.

Watch the Race

Watch a recap of how it all went down at the ORAMM via their Champion Chip GPS tracking device. Hit play then the forward button to 60x to watch riders' icons move around the course. Remember, this is still in the testing phase. Some of the riders had technical issues with their GPS devices and distance/speed information is not accurate. For reference: The sportrack Tracker was a support vehicle.

GPS Race Tracker

We're going to be testing out a new thing this year...GPS tracking. A handful of the top riders will be equipped with a GPS unit that will track their movements on a fancy little computer program. This should allow us to give spectators an accurate idea of when the top finishers will be crossing the finish line. Pretty cool. Thanks to AMB i.t. (Champion Chip) for making this possible. We look forward to seeing how this new technology will work for backcountry mountain biking.

Water Pillows

Who would think this could hold 300 gallons of water?

Recent Trailwork on Star Gap

Heather and I headed out to Star Gap a few days ago to do some trailwork. We cleared a huge tree, did some much needed treadwork, and of course trimmed the trail. More to come soon!
